We went to “Saga dainenbutsu kyogen” when Seiryou temple at March 15th.
“Saga dainenbutsu kyogen” is a folk performing art designated as a national important intangible folk cultural property.
Actors were “Omen” and perform their plays using only their body language and hand movements to the sound of the “hayashi” musician’s drums and flutes.
Because there are no words, people from all over the world can capture and enjoy the performance with their own sensibilities.
There are two types.”Yawarakamon” and “Katamon”.
There are 20 types of performances.
Highlight 1.We can't see the skin
Actors wrap a white cloth around their face and head, and put on an “Omen”.
It also covers ears and neck.
The stage is located high up and is covered by a low fence, so you cannot see the actor’s feet.
why don't they show any skin？Because they died.(dead man setting)
If you look closely at the kimono, you will see that the obi is tied in the opposite direction. This is also a way to express the dead.
Highlight 2.Kyogen×Cafe
One of the programs “Atagomairi”
This is a story about a mother, daughter, and husband who come to a tea shop.The popular menu at the cafe “Vagabaan”, which opened in July 2023 on the grounds of Seiryoji Temple, “Nostalgic Chaya Dango” is a product name called “Atagomairi”.
Other menu at this cafe are named Kyogen performances.
The inside of the store is made of glass so you can see the grounds. When you look up at the ceiling, you'll see it sparkling like a starry sky, so we recommend going there at 5:30 p.m., just before it closes.
Highlight 3.Tile Throwing and Tsuchigumo
In the middle of “Atagomairi”there is a scene where the husband and tomo are having fun drinking tea and throwing tiles.The tile was thrown towards the audience.
The words “Sagadainenbutsukyogen'' are written there in black and vermilion calligraphy. It seems like good luck if you can get it!
In the performance called “Tsuchigumo” the last of the performance involves throwing a tsuchigumo thread.
The scene where a large amount of thread comes out is very powerful.
It is said that if you keep the thread in your wallet, you will become rich.

とっておきの京都スタッフは、3月15日清涼寺で行われた「嵯峨大念佛狂言」を観覧しに行きました。
嵯峨大念佛狂言は、国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定される民俗芸能です。
役者さんはお面を被り、囃子方の太鼓や笛の音に合わせて身振り手振りだけで芝居をします。
セリフがないので全世界の方がそれぞれの感性で、演目を捉えることができ、楽しむことができます。
嵯峨大念佛狂言は大きく分けて「ヤワラカモン」という狂言仕立ての演目と、「カタモン」という能楽系の演目の2つがあり、合わせて20種類の演目があります。
嵯峨大念佛狂言の見どころ①肌が一切見えない
役者さんは、白い布を顔から頭にかけて巻きつけ、その上にお面を被ります。
耳や首も隠れるように白い布を被せます。
狂言の舞台は高いところにあり、少し低めの柵で舞台が覆われているため役者さんの足を見ることができません。
なぜ肌を一切見せないのか。それは狂言の出演者は皆死者だからです。
死者だということを表現するため肌は見せないようになっているのだそう。
衣装をよく見ると、着物の帯が逆向きに結ばれています。これも死者を表現するための工夫です。
嵯峨大念佛狂言の見どころ②狂言×カフェ
約20ある演目の中の1つ「愛宕詣」
お茶屋さんに来る母親と娘、旦那との話なのですが、清涼寺境内にある2023年7月にできたカフェ「ヴァガバァーン」の人気メニュー「昔懐かしい茶屋団子」は愛宕詣という商品名です。
このカフェでは他のメニューも狂言の演目が商品名になっていて、黒糖本わらび餅は釈迦如来、お茶とあんバター最中は花盗人などの名前になっています。
店内は境内を眺められるようガラス張りになっています。店員さんも気さくに話しかけてくださり、とても穏やかな雰囲気が流れています。天井を見上げると星空のようにキラキラしていて、閉店ギリギリの17:30に行くのがとてもおすすめです。

嵯峨大念佛狂言の見どころ③瓦投げと土蜘蛛
先ほど紹介した演目「愛宕詣」の中盤で、旦那と供がお茶屋で、お茶を飲んで瓦を投げて楽しむシーンがあります。その瓦は観客に向かって投げられ、そこには「嵯峨大念佛狂言」と黒色と朱色の筆で書かれています。取れたら縁起が良さそうですね！
そして「土蜘蛛」という演目では、演目の後半に土蜘蛛が綱から逃げようとするシーンがあります。保昌に挟み撃ちにされ激しい戦いとなるのですが、その時に土蜘蛛の糸を吐きます。大量の糸が出てくるシーンはとても迫力があり見どころです。
その糸はお財布に入れておくとお金持ちになると言われています。
